Genre: Jazz

Sound description: Blend of smooth jazz and instrumental pop

City: Fort Worth, TX

Ahmad Johnson is both a member of Faces The Band, a gospel jazz group from Fort Worth, and his own group, his Friends. Faces The Band has performed at the Caravan Of Dreams, Bass Hall, Texas Hall, and the Majestic Theatre, and has opened for Larry Carlton, Gerald Albright, Norman Brown, Spyra Gyra, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Ahmad's second major performance with his own band was as the opener for the Guitars And Saxes concert in 2005.

Ahmad is as comfortable presenting original pieces as he is covering smooth jazz classics. He also has no problem exploring other genres like funk or gospel. Ahmad loves music, and isn't afraid to step beyond what is expected of a smooth jazz saxophonist.

Influences

When writing, Ahmad is influenced mostly by producers, from Rick Braun to Dr. Dre to Quincy Jones to The Neptunes. However, when performing, it is easy to tell how much time he has spent studying legendary sax players in the smooth jazz genre.

Today

Laurie Anderson Laurie Anderson is indescribably delicious. She's hitting McFarlin tonight with her new show, Homeland, and you can bet it will contain intellectual stimulation and pure unadulterated weirdness in equal measure. An album will follow the Homeland tour in 2009. More info
