Bagg was started in 1999 by Grady Sandlin (Drums), Ben Robertson (bass), and Andy La Violette (guitar). Initially the band just got together to jam and play some original material at low key parties around Denton, TX. All of the members of Bagg were studying music at UNT in the early years. Andy was in a class there called "Aural Skills" that was taught by Gaah(n) (keyboardist). Gaah(n) proved to have a masterfull knowledge of music theory and piano skills. Soon there after, Gaah(n) opened for "bag" at a local show. The band fell in love with his Rhodes Piano skills. Gaah(n) eventually joined the band changing the groups name from "bag" to "bagg."

Based on several free shows the band played at "The Shack" in Denton, Bagg gained attention locally as Denton's little jam band. Bagg enjoyed great success in Denton and set their sights on Dallas as another area of focus. Bagg plays once or twice a month in Denton and will take fun gigs in Dallas or Ft. Worth as often as they can find them, even bringing their Denton fans to Big D on a chartered bus.

Unfortunately, the bus blew a gasket in May 2006, as the band decided to call it quits after a final show at Dan's Silverleaf.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
