His original contemporary instrumental music is a unique style combining his experience in the genres of symphonic, chamber, pop, jazz, folk and world music. He performs in many musical styles and composes much of his own material. His main focus is on Early Music (Baroque and Renaissance) and Contemporary World Music. In June 2005, he released Returning Home, a solo CD of original instrumental music.

Cornell received a music degree in woodwind performance, focusing on modern oboe, bassoon, and historic woodwinds. He has studied recorder in workshop settings with some of the finest players and teachers in the U.S. and Europe. Instruments that Cornell performs on include recorders, Native American style flute, Indian bansuri, bamboo flutes, ocarina, oboe, and English horn.
