Adam and Darrin Kobetich started Electric Mountain Rotten Apple Gang in April 2005. They had jammed together for 10 years in experimental metal band Amillion Pounds (incorporating a banjo in at least one of the songs) until the band's demise in the summer of 2004. During the last years of the band, their interest in bluegrass grew, thanks to many a campfire jam at Old Settler's Music Festival, the Kerrville Folk Festival, and Walnut Valley Festival. Darrin had been making a name for himself playing solo acoustic guitar instrumentals during that time as well, making several contacts in the Fort Worth/Dallas music scene, which proved beneficial in the formation of the band.
Darrin had met Mark Deffebach (who currently slings the axe for the Damon Carol Band) through several jams and in-the-rounds, and ended up booking improvisational gigs at local coffee houses and taverns with him and several other local musicians who came and went. One of those musicians was Matt Skates, a bass player who was doing jazz gigs in the street. They went on to start up the now immensely popular fusion outfit known as Confusatron. Matt had commented a couple of times to Darrin that he'd be interested in playing bluegrass. So, when Adam came up with the name and idea of the band, everything just fell into place. Not long after that, Darrin brought Mark into the fold.
