Fritz Schultz's father played harmonica and sang the blues. His grandfather was a working cowboy who loved Ernest Tubb, so growing up Schultz was influenced by all the early country singers. He began playing guitar about age 9 or 10, and his first lessons were on lap steel. But back then he wanted to stand up and play like Elvis.
After high school, Schultz ended up in Florida in a four-piece acoustic band called Fat & Happy, playng Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young covers. After they split up, Schultz played solo. Eventually he ended up in a band called California Mountains, playing originals and country covers of artists such as John Price and Hank Williams.
