Johnny Case
- Sound Description:
- Politically-inspired jazz
Based in Fort Worth, TX
Johnny Case was born August 24, 1947, to musical parents. Most of his childhood was spent in Paris, Texas, where he and his older brother, guitarist Jerry Case, became child performers on area stage, radio, and television shows. By late 1964 when the Cases relocated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Johnny had become a pianist playing in dance bands.
In 1969, Johnny began to issue his own recordings and the series continues to the present day. The spectrum of genres is remarkably wide and includes free improvisational/experimental music, mainstream jazz, western swing, avant garde jazz, musique concrete and traditional country music. The many influences on his music are likewise extremely varied.
Known primarily as a jazz pianist, Johnny has performed with such distinguished jazz figures as James Clay, Billy Hart, Marchel Ivery and Colin Bailey. In 1983, Johnny played at a reception for Ornette Coleman at the opening of Fort Worth's Caravan of Dreams. Most remarkable, perhaps, is the fact that Johnny has been playing mainstream jazz nightly for over 20 years at Sardine's Ristorante in Fort Worth.
In the spring of 2003, Johnny related many of his music memories and experiences in an extensive oral history conducted by Dr. Peggy Brown for the University of North Texas. In June 2004, he was among the inaugural class of four veteran performers inducted into the Fort Worth Music Hall of Fame by the Fort Worth Weekly. In September 2004, Case released Waiting For the Moment on Seabreeze, appeared with his quintet at Jazz by the Boulevard, and celebrated the 21st anniversary of his jazz gig at Sardines.
