AWESOME TIME AT CJ'S!!
- Jonny the Saint and the Velvet Hand took the stage by storm last Saturday night. For close to 3 hours straight, in a marathon set that would have made a lot of hearty acts wilt, JTS and his Velvet Hand, marshaled their singular blend of street-corner funk with some judiciously chosen covers (Steve Miller, the Allmans, even a wackily fun foray into the Gloved One’s Beat It) to fill out a crowd pleasing evening. And crowd pleasing it was as JTS is gaining, from performance to performance a kind of irresistible momentum in their sets, with Jonny the Saint establishing his stage and vocal presence early on without the benefit of playing a single note on his guitar. Its testimony to the faith that he has in his crack back-up trio of Danny Pitt on Gibraltar solid Fender bass and chiming backing vocals, spitfire drummer-and raspy tenor vocalist, Andy “Kato” Weaver, and ants-in-his-pants, though musically thoughtful keyboardist-singer, Andrew Marton, that he will spend entire key songs of his carefully chosen repertoire just marinating the crowd with his voice and subtle stage moves with nary a power chord in sight to hide behind. That shrewd decision to keep the guitar at bay at first only amplifies – literally and figuratively – tone tasteful, harmonic-flecked guitar solos that he sprinkles throughout the rest of the evening. This is a band that seems to have arrived before our collective eyes.

... and so is Jonny the Saint and the Velvet Hand, in the opinion of this poster. I wish that we'd had Awesome back in my day.
