Rock and roll to the core; no muss, no fuss, music for music’s sake. The Mermaid Purse synchronizes cool grooves and “big rock” guitars alongside soaring vocal melodies. Their powerfully emotional songs will hold you with their contagious vibe and inspired vision of rock and roll music for the “right now.”
The Mermaid Purse concept began as the by-product of recording and writing songs in the home studio of Eric Shutt, former singer/guitarist for the seminal Texas rock band Doosu. After compiling songs that arose from the recording sessions into a full length demo cd, a long line of local talent stepped up to bring Shutt’s vision of The Mermaid Purse to a profound reality. Founding members included Justin Wilson (Red Animal War, Sabeteur), Jason Jones (The Feds), and Dominic Weir (Flickerstick, Smile Empty Soul).
With help from long time friends Mike Graff (Course of Empire, Pleasure Club, Halls of the Machine), Todd Harwell (Doosu, Flickerstick) and Alex Gerst, a full-production album was completed in late 2004 with Shutt at the producing helm.
Due to time constraints with other projects, the lineup of The Mermaid Purse fluctuated for several months solidifying with the current line-up of Jim Keith (Soviet Space, Horses) on bass guitar and backing vocals, Nick Cardinale (Maroon) playing drums, and Gabe Cardinale (Maroon, Kingdom of Snakes) on guitar.
Since it’s inception, The Purse has toured extensively throughout the south and midwest, expanding its fan base and gaining air play on commercial and college radio across the nation. The Mermaid Purse continues to write, record and evolve with their own vision of music.
