Mondo Drummers is a program that began in 1994 through the Eastside Neighborhood Arts Center as an outreach program for at-risk youths. While percussion and hand instruments are the focus of the program, Mondo goes a few steps further by teaching the history and culture of musical styles from around the world. Once the culture, history and unique instruments are introduced, the students learn the rhythms and then produce the sounds that create the music. In 1999, Mondo became its own 501(c)3 non-profit corporation reaching 10,500 children in area metroplex schools and libraries. Mondo Drummers Performance Ensemble was the first youth hand drum and percussion ensemble in Texas and recorded their first CD, It Was a Big Sky, After All, in 1999.
