Mongolia began as one of many solo projects of Nick Wilson (also of Exploding Schoolgirls, Carrot Eaters and Warm Erasers and owner of Paper Hat Records) in 2003. The original incarnation of the project was dark and experimental, but the sound moved in a more expansive experimental pop direction around 2005, inspired by slowcore, 80s Britpop and post-punk. The project became a band in 2008 with David Swift on guitar, Bradford Jackson on drums and Connor Stratman on guitar.
