In the Fall of 2003, Amber Farris was hanging out at the house on Seedling lane, Josh King’s former home, when their musical chemistry showed its first spark. The two were instantly charmed by each other’s affinity to pop folk music. The duo immediately started to write songs and seek out new members to form a band whose collaborative ideas would soon be known as “Raleigh”.
The first added member was keyboardist and bass guitarist Sally Glass. This threesome soon became complete with the additions of Russell Slatter and Calen Pace. Russell, Calen, and Josh were old school chums from the suburbs of Dallas. At the time, both Russell and Calen were involved in a stagnant project, which quickly ended upon invitation to this pop entourage. Once Russell and Calen joined Raleigh, both were ready to be involved in a new, original, and lively group of musicians. Calen soon became Josh’s roommate at the house on Seedling lane, which then co-existed as their practice space and think tank.
Soon songs were composed and together the band began playing shows. This prompted the quintet to apply for the North Texas New Music Festival Battle of the Bands where Raleigh placed third and received funding to record their first EP Silver Dollar Smoke Alarm.
A year and many songs later, Sally got the traveling bug and left the band to study abroad. Josh adopted keyboards upon Sally’s absence and suggested picking up an additional guitarist, David Ponder. However, David was no stranger to Raleigh; he had been a friend and former band mate of Josh’s in their previous band “Bonaducci”. Once David learned Raleigh’s catalog, it was only a matter of time before his unique signature was ingrained within the material. This fresh lineup completed their 60s-esque, psychedelic rock mission and readied them for the making of The House on Seedling Lane, the backdrop to where it all began.
