Solitude Aeturnus began when guitarist John Perez quit his thrash metal band Rotting Corpse in early 1987. A long time follower of the Sabbath heavy sounds of early '80s groups like Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Black Hole, Nemesis and the like, Perez decided the time was right to make a move into what was known at the time as doom metal.

The band entered the studio in January 1988 to record their five-song demo Justice For All (which preceded the Metallica album of the same name by about seven months.) At the time, the band's name was Solitude. Two years later, they changed the name to the current version.

SA released five albums between 1991-98 and underwent various lineup changes during that time, as well as afterward.
