Summer Salt began as an instrumental project with only Jackson Archer and Phil Baier playing. Tired of the drum machine, they decided they needed an actual human being. Eugene Chung joined in mid-2007. After playing instrumentally for some time, Matt Terry joined the band in late-2007 as vocals and guitar.
