Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Surel is the youngest daughter in a Christian family that instilled in her, from an early age, the importance of a life centered on Christ. She considers herself a true southern woman, boldly independent and committed, first and foremost, to God and family.
Even as a child, Surel followed her own path, unwilling to chase the hollow promise of popular trends. She joined the church choir at 5 and has sung lead in the church band for most of her life. Always drawn to writing poetry, she began penning her own songs during her years at Desoto High School, where she advanced with honors as a top Southwest scholar.
After graduation, she continued her education at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she earned her B.A. in speech communication and psychology. This course of study offered her new insights into human thought and behavior, and how to connect with the heart.
Her debut album, For My Good, was released in 2006.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
