More Than Just a Great Cup

Posted By Bob Baker in Coffee Talk on May 8, 2006

Did you know that in the world there are about the same number of people employed directly in the coffee business as there are people in Texas, that’s over 20 million people! Coffee is the second most actively traded commodity just behind oil. It’s grown with a few exceptions, in emerging or third world countries, within about 1000 miles from the equator.

With that many people involved there are many that are exploited, abused, poisoned, and just being ripped off. We don’t like that, here at White Rock Coffee, and are working hard finding the world’s best coffee that is produced by farms that are members of Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, and Utz Kapeh, just to name three organizations that are helping immensely to reform the coffee industry as a whole. We’re also aligning with small importers that have been proponents of sustainable coffee growing and have been doing a great job with helping with local infrastructure, in these mainly remote communities, around the world. They also show the growers how to use composting, natural fertilizers, and natural insect abatement. There are also a number of religious groups working with the coffee growers in these areas. They help the locals build churches, schools, bring in doctors and small clinics. Over the next few weeks Coffee Talk will explore and discuss the ways that coffee comes to market and show how you can help, just by the coffee you choose. It will give you a warm feeling inside, in more ways than one.
