For The Fishin’ Musician

Posted By Blair Lovern in Keep It Country on April 18, 2006

One day at the Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine I took a photo of fish/outdoors man Jimmy Houston and his hair hawking some fishing rod/reel lube on a little TV. His hair is so captivating.

SCTV used to have a sketch called the Fishin' Musician, and John Candy (back when he was funny) would say something along the lines of, “Oh, yeah, I love to fish. Can’t stand to eat ‘em, though.” And then he’d go out and fish with Carl Perkins or Jimmy Buffett or Joe Walsh, and then come back and not eat the fish they caught and then everyone would play a song, the end.

All of this is a convoluted introduction to Let’s Step Outside (in stores May 30 by Compadre Records), which features fourteen country music acts performing songs that celebrate the great outdoors.

Every CD will include a reply card good for a one-year subscription to Texas Music Magazine. Limited edition Let’s Step Outside T-shirts will be available at Compadre Records.

Track List:

1. “Take Me Home, Country Roads” – Honeybrowne (previously unreleased)

2. “The Fisherman” - Jack Ingram

3. “Five Pound Bass” - Robert Earl Keen

4. “Slew Foot” - James McMurtry (with Joe Ely)

5. “West Texas Holiday” - Pat Green

6. “They Call it the Hill Country” - Randy Rogers Band

7. “Beer, Bait and Ammo” - Kevin Fowler

8. “I Got the Guns” - Roger Creager

9. “Keep Texas Beautiful” - Jerry Jeff Walker

10. “Dance by the Rio Grande” - Cory Morrow

11. “John Boat Blues” - Jason Allen

12. “Snowfall” - Reckless Kelly

13. “South Coast of Texas” - Guy Clark

14. “My Kind of Day on Padre” - Gary P. Nunn

If it’s too hot to fish or hunt, go see a baseball game in Frisco and hang out at the new pool in right field.

Hopper, says:

"...John Candy (back when he was funny)."

Back when he was alive too.
