Basking In A Casket: Johnny Cash

Keep It Country

Published: July 5, 2006

From this story:

"LONDON (Reuters) - Country music legend Johnny Cash is basking in posthumous praise for 'American V: A Hundred Highways', a collection of songs recorded just before his death in 2003 and the penultimate album in the 'American' series."

A request for those who wrote that sentence, accompanying headline and photo caption: Search high and low and here and yonder to find me the biggest, fattest, juiciest, slobber-infested break, then dress up like the Queen of England's butler, comb your hair, do not make eye contact whatsoever and give it to me on a sterling silver platter.

Haven't heard the CD yet, which was released Tuesday. I'm sure it's good. And trust me, I know I'm just Keeping It Anal today, but for someone working for a company based in the heart of the country that produced our fair language, that's a pitiful start to a story about the Great Mr. Cash, who hasn't basked in anything for three years.

The American albums are my favorite in the Cash Canon. (#2 is my favorite of all.) And I know I should be chomping at the bit to get my hands on this one, but I'm just not up for a mortality-fest these days. My understanding is that these songs are beautifully dour.

The songs I heard sound like they need a cold night, a campfire, and a bottle of cheap whiskey. With the firearms locked away.
