Gretchen Wilson Kicked My Teeth In

Keep It Country

Published: March 29, 2006

Women: Can't live with them, can't listen to them (put down your damn cast iron skillet, that's not me talking, that's Nash-where?)

Over at monstersandcritics.com they ask Is it a bad time to be a new female country artist?

From a Nash-where? fat cat, here is the dumbest argument in this story: "Sony Music Nashville president John Grady added at CRS (Country Radio Seminar), 'I just got my teeth kicked in on a Gretchen Wilson record, so maybe the era [of women artists] is over.' He was referring to Wilson`s ballad 'I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today,' which peaked at No. 22 on Hot Country Songs in December."

(I don't know what on earth he's saying. Contrast this with Grady's other statements on Gretchen Wilson. There may be something left out of the Monsters and Critics story, I have no idea.)

Regardless, maybe if you Nash-where? people started rolling out music that other people thought was cool then you wouldn't have this problem? Geez Damn Louise - do you know the lyrics of that Kicked In The Teeth Song, John Grady?

A sample:

I don't want to talk about last night

I'm angry, and I haven't had much sleep

And I'm so tired and bloodshot

There ain't no tellin' what I'd say

'Cause I don't feel like loving you today

Country music can bring the great heartache songs, but this one is too vague. "YOU DIDN'T CLEAN THE GUTTERS!" Or "WHY DID YOU FORGET DISHWASHING DETERGENT WHEN I ASKED YOU TO GET DISHWASHING DETERGENT?!?!?!" What's the premise of this song? Hell, I have no idea. Plus she says she'll love you anyway, but she doesn't want to talk about it now, just bitch - what the hell is this crap? I'm outta here.

FORGOT YOUR KEYS, JERK!

Damnit.

Yeah, that spells hit single.

More Dallas people from the Monsters and Critics story:

"KPLX (the Wolf) Dallas assistant program director Smokey Rivers notes that the format`s gender debate is hardly new. 'This format has never been a safe haven for female artists,' he says. 'They usually only make up 10 percent-20 percent of a station`s weekly playlist.' "

And:

"It does seem to me that female records do seem to have a much more difficult time gaining traction and lasting through the long haul,' says Chris Huff, assistant program director/music director of KSCS and KTYS Dallas. 'We've had recent records from more tenured females like Martina, Faith and Sara that are standing the long-term test, but even the biggest records from the biggest female breakthrough of the last few years - [like] Gretchen Wilson - have had problems with staying power.' "

CMT aired a show on the 40 most important female country artists. Here's their list, which does not include (gasp) Gretchen Wilson.

P.S. Sara Hamilton is playing in our office right now. She's dang good, John Grady.

Ballads generally suck, period, no matter what gender. You should get your teeth kicked in. Very few exceptions to this TFG Rule of Music exist. Making #22 with a whiny-ass ballad about your long talk last night should really be cause for exaltation and champagne.

Personally, though, I blame female artist's woes on joints like CMT validation of the Trashville fraud Shania Twain.
