What the hell are the Rice Krispies characters?

Posted By Blair Lovern in Keep It Country on October 19, 2006

Are they sprites, gnomes, elves, pixies or fairies? I emailed Kellogg's to find out because we in the office have no consensus.

Chris Curotolo says:

Okay, I started this discussion. I called Kellogg 10 yrs ago. The conversation went like this:

Me: "What are Snap Cracle and Pop?"

Pissed off Kellogg respresentative: "Excuse me?"

Me: "Are they elves?"

Pissed off Kellogg respresentative: "Hold on sir. I am searching characters right now. Sir?"

Me: "Yes?"

Pissed off Kellogg respresentative: "They are gnomes."

Thank you. End of story.

Blair Lovern says:

"Most Gnomes are 7 times stronger than a man, can run at speeds of 35 miles per hour, and have better sight than a hawk. These abilities help the Gnome to do many things, such as find wounded, dying animals for which they feel they are responsible for. Because of their love for animals, all the animals of the forest are the Gnome's friends and are willing to help him at any time. Many people say that gnomes have elevated practical jokes to an art form. But most especially they love gems and jewelry and are considered by many to be the best gem cutters and jewelers in existence."

Chad Jones says:

They are definitely not gnomes.

Gnomes are old (often with long gray bears), gnomes are grumpy, and most importantly, gnomes are stumpy. That's why they just sit there in the yard. They don't do anything.

Elves, on the other hand, are happy, mobile and adventurous.

Why would Kellogg's choose a buncha grumpy old bastards to peddle their exciting cereal that pops and snaps with pizazz?

If anyone tells you gnomes, they're misinformed.

You said yourself the representative was pissed off. He/She probably just said that to shut you up. Gnomes are indeed grumpy whatsits, such as Gimli - And I see no long gray beards OR bears, so these are definitely not gnomes. They are elves. Elves, Chris!

Chris Curotolo says:

The following link is from the Kellogg website. I believe it will appease both gnome and elf supporters alike. Apparently, Snap, Crackle and Pop were originally gnomes until around 1949 when the people at Kellogg took the "eye candy" approach of converting them into cute little freakin' elves. Perhaps the customer service rep was reading from an old mid-century pre-elf leaflet of some sort. I still say, once a gnome, always a gnome.

Hmm . . . I didn't know Crackle had issues with self-doubt. Couldn't tell from the commercials.

Alan, you are right if that video was made after 1949. That's as far as I will go.

After much research and deliberation, I vote elves. Note similarities to the keebler elves (pointy ears, small roundish noses and similar chef hats)

That picture might be one of the funniest things I have ever seen. There is an uncanny likeness. I'm still confused, which are they? If gnomes before, what did they look like before? Because you can't just switch from gnomes to elves since they look different.

Blair Lovern says:

Rice Krispies characters are/were gnomes. Below is Kellog's response. Now it's The End.

Blair,

Thank you for contacting us regarding Rice Krispies Characters.

The words SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!™ without characters first appeared on a Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal package front in 1932. The next year (1933) a tiny gnome wearing a baker's hat and carrying a spoon topped a side panel. This gave SNAP!™, who always wears a baker's hat, some seniority. CRACKLE!™ and POP!™ joined SNAP!™ in print ads in the early 1930's, although SNAP!™ still appeared solo on packages as late as 1936.

By 1939, SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!™ were together on side and back panels of Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal packages. They were also featured as the heroes of comic strips. During World War II, they patriotically posed in ads that urged consumers to "Save time, save fuel, save energy."

In 1949, SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!™ changed drastically from gnomes with huge noses, ears and oversized hats to more human creatures with boyish haircuts, proportional features and smaller hats. Throughout the years, the SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!™ voices have changed from high-pitched elfin squeaks into more pleasant speaking and singing ranges.

We appreciate your interest in our company and products.

Sincerely,

Yesenia Sanchez Consumer Affairs Department
