Ring-a-ding ding? Need some cell phone advice

Posted By Mike Orren in The One That's Not About Music on December 30, 2005

So, one of the features we're planning to unveil soon is free ringtones for local bands. The deal is that any local band can give us one song and we'll make a ringtone from it-- for free. Then we'll post it on their band page-- also for free.

We've hit a couple of speedbumps (not roadblocks) and wonder if any of our readers who are more knowledgable have any ideas.

  • The big one is creating a clear one-size-fits-all method for getting the ringtone to user phones. We've managed to send our test tone to one of our cell phones by downloading it and then sending it to the phone by text message. That seems a bit clunky and won't work with any but the more advanced phones. Also, note that our SMS mechanism is actually email-to-sms, so none of that "text ringtone to 36452" stuff is an option for now.
  • The other is less critical. But, I fear it has no good solution. We had planned to offer "TrueTone" MP3 ringtones and polyphonic Midis. We've got the TrueTones down-- piece of cake. But so far we've been unable to find a solution for the midis other than having a professional musician hand-craft them, something our little startup outfit isn't geared for. Anyone know of a good MP3-midi translator? I'll be shocked if there is one. I've tried a few, but I haven't seen any that can distinguish the "important" bits and bytes in a song the way the human ear can.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Just post a comment below.
