Today, April brought me a bottle of champagne to toast The Anniversary.
Not our wedding anniversary -- that's in October. (And this year, I was so preoccupied, I forgot it.)
No -- It was one year ago today that I left the world of a six-figure salary (plus bonus) to pursue the Pegasus News vision full time.
I made that move with little financial cushion (and that's an understatement). What cushion there was, veterinary mishaps and car troubles quickly sucked away. I went from being the primary breadwinner to bringing in next to nothing. (This is still pretty much a volunteer operation, from top to bottom.)
In the past year, April was part of a layoff; took a job that I found and talked her into, with disastrous results; and finally took a job working a six-days/week, 3:30 PM to 1 AM shift for the government in a unbelievably dismal work environment. Think Office Space without the profits.
Add to that the fact that I am a slob when it comes to housekeeping. And that I appear to have lost half of what little money I earned this year to a conniving contractor, because work on Pegasus made me think that I was too busy to do due dilligence on something related to home.
April hasn't had a vacation in at least two years.
She's listened to me whine about my problems in launching this venture. She's kicked me in the ass and egged me on to move from begging to building. The few windfalls we've had have gone to buying me things that would help me in the business.
For her, the past 365 days have been one giant turd sandwich, seasoned with the mustard of financial woes, the relish of plumbing problems, the pickle spear of a lack of personal time and a side dish of general uncertainty.
And yet, she just toasted The One-Year Anniversary, saying "Enough is a feast."
When people ask me about the differentiators that will make this business succeed, I usually talk about disruptive business models, management team and the like. But, perhaps, I should just say, "April has my back."
Don't get me wrong -- We wouldn't be having this conversation if it weren't for my partners, Gary and Kevin; for our dedicated staff; for Cindy having teamed up with us; for our Angel Investors; or for you, our community.
But, this business adventure crusade has a patron saint.
And her name is April.

Cheers to April! How I wish we could get her out so I could buy that woman a well-deserved beer.
