Wall o’ inspiration: Over the Cliff
Posted By Mike Orren in The One That's Not About Music on January 2, 2006
In an effort to have a "regular feature," something I've found helps bring consistency to a blog, I'm sharing a series of items that I keep on a bulletin board in front of my elliptical trainer. They're not exactly the usual inspirational saws, but they keep me going, at least on the rare occasions that I actually use the elliptical.
This seemed a good one to start with, since the Old 97's favored us with a rare performance of my personal favorite from their repetoire during their show at the Gypsy Tea Room on Friday.
"Over the Cliff," is actually a Waco Brothers cover, written by Jon Langford, and performed by the 97's on Wreck Your Life.
I think I've only seen 'em do it live two or three times. But it's alwasy a big deal for me, because it's always spoken to me -- either as a lament when unhappy trying to plug myself into someone else's concept of what a business should be, or as a revelrous testament to the damn-the-torpedos, seat-of-the-pants exhilaration of an adventure of my own design.
I named my first company, Cliffmedia, after the song. And the last changed-up chorus graces my Wall o' Inspiration:
"Success on someone else's terms don't mean a f-in thing"
Hearing the boys perform it on Friday with the several members of team Pegasus in tow was a great moment for me.
