So you were an early adopter and got yourself a 3G (pre-clickwheel Ipod). You love your tunes, but secretly lust after a more hi-tech model, perhaps even with that decadent vid-yee-oh you've been hearing so much about. But you can't bring yourself to toss a perfectly functional piece of Apple-y goodness.
Well we have a rare opportunity for you. We'll BUY your old Ipod right now.
For those suspicious souls who must know the details, we're trying to simplify and multiply our podcasting teams. And we've figured out a nice, cheap rig for recording via an Ipod, but the problem is that Apple, in its constant kowtowing to The Man, has put a governor on the Ipod's bitrate for recording, so as to prevent high-quality sound. There is a hack that will get us around that, but they closed the loophole with the 4G model.
So, if you've got a 3G Ipod, regardless of hard drive size, we'll buy it for $100, which should put you well on the way to a sleeker model.
We prefer to pay via PayPal so we can get our free miles. We'll buy up to three.
If you've got an ancient Ipod to sell, gimme a shout.

Uh, the 4G will record, too...

Yeah, I know it will record, but only at lower quality (by factory settings). But what I'm worried about is increasing the quality to 96khz. And the podzilla propaganda is really clear about 4G not being supported yet for Podzilla. Between that and some user horror storiesI saw online, I was scared off from trying to install it on a 4G. Then, realizing that several of our podcasters didn't have an Ipod anyway, buying an older one for this purpose didn't seem like such a bad deal.

But am I missing something? Cindy said you were recording some shows. What are you using?

I use a P1 266 mhz laptop with 96 MB of RAM and a crappy factory-default sound card. It's old but serviceable.
Actually, the 4G will take all bitrates, as long as you use the LATEST builds of Podzilla (though those aren't entirely stable). But even if you get a 3G, the iPod's a messy solution to portable recording, only because the battery life can be suspect--recording drains the battery a lot more quickly than playing mp3s does because it forces constant access to the iPod HD. I'd recommend finding a cheap-ass laptop instead; you'll have so much more control over recording and having multiple instances open and it's not that hard to use. Why, even Cindy can do it. :)

Good advice-- and we are primarily using laptops. But this is more for a backup solution, like for getting interviews remote while also recording a show on the laptop.

I've got one of these, and an iTalk to record with, but it has serious issues with background noise as it's quite sensitive. Any ideas on eliminating the extraneous noise clutter to improve the recording quality?
Sam's right on the battery issues, but if you have an outlet nearby, you can plug the thing in while recording.

I've been told that attaching a microphone to the line out in the Italk eliminates the problem, as the noise is really from hard drive whirring.
