The One That's Not About Music

Published: March 13, 2006

1. The Star-Telegram has new owners. Best of the available devils for the paper and the community. And apparently economic gurus see cowtown as more of a growth market than Philadelphia, San Jose, Akron, Wilkes Barre, Aberdeen, Grand Forks, Ft. Wayne, Contra Costa, Monterey and Duluth -- which go back on the auction block.

2. The third annual "State of the News Media" report is out today. The first edition was instrumental in the writing of our business plan. The second required us to make a lot of nitpicky, but not substantive changes. My thoughts on the third TK.

For the uninitiated, which included me, The Star-Telegram was a Knight Ridder (KR) paper. KR was just sold to McClatchy, a firm less known for its commitment to quality journalism (says I with the velvet glove).

Dan Gillmor has a good perspective on the deal because he worked for the San Jose Mercury (also a KR paper), and is a journalist in the high sense of the word.

Oh, and I have no idea what "the third TK" means.

All true, Jeremy. But the other suitor was Gannett, a company much less known for quality journalism commitment.

I was saying that my thoughts on the third (new edition) of the report are "to come." TK is newspaperspeak for "to come."

I warned that it was inside baseball. Thanks for clarifying the gist -- I was short on time.
