The Saints come marching in — with a concert

Posted By Mike Orren in The One That's Not About Music on September 25, 2006

Unfortunately, a self-inflicted computer snafu caused me to miss the opening of Monday Night Football, featuring a mini-concert from U2 and Green Day.

Fortunately, Uncle Barky tells the tale.

If Adam Ant and Elizabeth Taylor were brother and sister and were about 30-ish BUT Elizabeth Taylor had the hair that she has now, and if they had another brother about the same age with the same hair as his sister, then Billie Joe Armstrong would be that brother.

It did seem odd to watch the pre-game concert and wonder why no New Orleans musicians were featured on-stage.

I saw it, it was ok. But what really blew my mind was that commercial showing Steve Nash with a shaved head!

If Steve Nash had the hair of an older Elizabeth Taylor and wore the same kind of jewelry his team photo would look like this.

There actually were a lot of New Orleans musicians being featured in that performance...Big Sam and Trombone Shorty were up there along with some members of Rebirth and a few others thrown in as well. I thought it was a nice performance.

Bono is probably the closest thing we have to a modern day prophet (cough cough)

I stand corrected -- I had the pregame show on as background noise and didn't catch them on-stage.

This is from the always-hilarious DJ Gallo from ESPN.com's Page 2:

"Most Ingenious Bit of Scheduling: the NFL

U2, Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls are all scheduled to perform tonight before the Saints-Falcons game in New Orleans. That's right, the Goo Goo Dolls. Now, you may wonder: "Why did the NFL schedule such a horrendous, washed-up band?" But you're missing the bigger picture. I think what they're saying is this -- look, some good things have happened here in the past year. Lives have been rebuilt and people have come together. This is the U2 and Green Day portion of the show. But as much progress as has been made, no one should think the Gulf Coast is completely healed. There is still a long way to go. There is still destruction. There is still sorrow. And to illustrate that, the Goo Goo Dolls will then come onto the stage. It's brilliant, really. I even hope they go the extra mile and ask for donations for Katrina relief -- if $10,000 is raised, the Goo Goo Dolls play three songs. If $20,000 is raised, they only play two, and so on."
