Crazy talk about local news

From USA Today, on a new report that the American Press Institute spent 2 million dollars developing.
The land rush to meet local information needs has barely begun," says Newspaper Next: The Transformation Project, based on a study of business models and practices sponsored by the American Press Institute.
For example, the report says that newspapers might assemble databases about parks, medical facilities and restaurants, information about schools, consumer-supplied ratings for restaurants, mechanics and contractors, as well as chat groups for parents and shoppers. . . ."
Heh. I laugh and cry. That's just what we're doing right now. And it hasn't cost anyone anywhere near $2 million.
For the 1,682nd -- and certainly not the last -- time, one of my favorite HughMcLeod cartoons:

You talk regularly about how the people working for you have been working for free (until recently). It may not have cost you anywhere near $2 million to assemble your data in your current state. But would it have cost anywhere near $2 million if your employees had been paid while working on that project? Serious question - I have no idea. Just trying to do an apples-to-apples comparison.
