RIP James Brown

Posted By Alan Cohen in Square Pegs on December 25, 2006

I know its Christmas, but its a sad day because James Brown has passed away. James is one of the few people ever that could legitimately claim to have changed music. He'll never be forgotten.

Teresa Gubbins, says:

Gotta love the quote from Jesse Jackson... that James Brown was dramatic to the end (by dying on Xmas Day), and will thus be today's big news - and would have it no other way.

Todd Maternowski, says:

I got to see James Brown just once, at a free outdoor concert in grant Park in Chicago with 100,000 other fans. He came out and opened the set with an 18-minute version of "Sex Machine", and moved more gracefuly at 60 than I can at half that age. Purple sequined superhero outfit, hair you could see bobbing for miles [and all this in 100 degree Chicago summer heat]... still ranks as one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Mike Orren, says:

Todd, you're a lucky man. Like Johnny Cash, JB escaped before I could see him perform.

Alan, that second video is my second-favorite JB performance. This is my favorite, a Sinatra-shaming rendition that has sustained me through many a tough time:

Brown routinely lost two or three pounds each time he performed, said Jay Ross, his lawyer of 15 years.

Reid Robinson, says:

We had a impromptu wake for James Brown at Lee Harvey's last night. Everyone was dancing, singing, and misty eyed. I checked his tour calendar yesterday and he had gigs booked all 2007. Truly the hardest working man in showbiz! Xmas has a new meaning for me.

James Brown died for our sins.
