Mansfield needs to name mascots too

Posted By Alan Cohen in Square Pegs on April 10, 2007

As you know, we love mascots here. So when I saw this story about Mansfield ISD asking for help in naming some new schools, I realized they would also need help naming a mascot. As I thought about it more, I realized that its really not about naming a good mascot, its more about not naming a bad mascot. So I ran a search for the worst mascot names, and came across a list for Texas highschools. I'm posting the full list below, but first let me say that The Praying Hands is perhaps my favorite team mascot ever. If there are any mascots not on this list that you think Mansfield ISD should avoid, feel free to use comments below.

Before anyone thinks it's racist, I had a friend who worked for Hereford ISD. "Whiteface" refers to a nickname for a Hereford cow. It has nothing to do with race.

My alma mater, Woodrow Wilson, are the original Wildcats. We went by "WWW" for almost 70 years before the internet. Too bad we didn't copyright that!
