Virginia Tech

Posted By Alan Cohen in Square Pegs on April 17, 2007

I've been glued to the news since I got home from work yesterday. This Virginia Tech killing spree is one of those tragedies that can leave a person at a complete loss for how to even react.

Its not local so it doesn't fit in our story section, but I'll post some thoughts from Larry James here.

--------

From Larry James Urban Daily:

The entire Virginia Tech community fills my mind and heart this morning.

The inexplicable massacre that took place in Blacksburg yesterday morning defies comprehension.

Thirty-three deaths, including the gunman who took his own life, and many injuries. . . .

So many questions.

Why?

Why these students?

Why murder completely innocent people?

How could this happen?

One of the weapons used in the disaster was purchased just last week.

Obviously, the shooter, apparently a Virginia Tech student, was deranged and troubled over a failed relationship. Did he have no friends? No support?

There are no answers. I expect that for many questions there will never be answers.

Pray for the community at Virginia Tech today. Pray for the students who were injured. Pray for the families who lost children and brothers and sisters.

You know, I've been reading Pegasus News for a while now, and the Square Pegs section is one of my favorite parts.

In the times we live in, there's always a lot of coverage by the media traversing every aspect of terrible stories like this. Haul-out the freaks in the dorm to interview, make the university President look uprepared, etc.

Sometimes we really do fail to see that words can't always express a story. This is a real tragedy, and I'm glad this short, but concerned post was made over demonizing the person responsible. In a situation like this there's no winners, and yet the media constantly wants to assign blame.

Good job, Alan. This is the best, most human news bite I've seen so far, and I as a reader appreciate it!

The student paper did a good job too:
