Beers and bears don’t mix

Some stories are impervious to the stroking of the writer's sensationalizing brush because they are innately sensational - no brushing required. This is one of them.
In the bear cage at Belgrade, Serbia, zookeepers this weekend were (probably) surprised to discover the half-eaten remains of a 23-year-old Serbian man in the process of being further consumed by Masha and Misha, the bears.
What gives this story its real narrative kick and raises it above the level of workplace tragedy, however, are the further details that 1) the man was not a zoo worker; 2) the incident occurred during the city's annual beer festival; and 3) the man's clothes were found neatly stacked just inside the enclosure. That's right, he stripped naked after getting into the cage, the reasons for which we can only speculate.
As the zoo director put it, "There's a good chance he was drunk or drugged," adding: "Only an idiot would jump into the bear cage." What could a journalist possibly add to this characterization of the incident? (O.K., he might go on to say that "only an idiot would jump into the bear cage and then strip naked," but that's splitting hairs.)
I really, really wanted to headline this story "Darwin is watching," and since the existing version won out I've included it here.

I want to know what the bears were doing with all those cell phones. Were the Verizon network people standing outside the cage watching? Can you hear me now? Grrrr!
