Texas’ conquest of the world continues unabated

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on August 28, 2007

I've been in my hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina on family business. Last night, I took my mom to a baseball game -- the minor league Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Imagine my surprise when I walked up to the beer stand and saw what they had on tap.

Crikey. Ye olde Spoetzl brewery is getting around.

Bonus link: Attention Frisco Rough Riders. You might consider adding this bit of marketing (scroll down to "Miss Babe Ruth") to your repertoire.

Wow. I had to make do with Guilford Golden Ale last year. You have to love a ballpark where you can order burritos at "Cornwallis' Last Stand." Go Hoppers!

The Greensboro-Dallas connection runs strong. I've met three such travelers through our site. Former Dallas City Council candidate John McClelland is also from G'boro.

And you're right about the stand names. O. Henry's Corner and Nathaniel (Greene)'s something or other were good names.

They have fireworks after every game and the most creative mid-inning promotions I've ever seen. Good times.

Looks like Shiner is available in about 40 states now (I'd link but it's annoying having to put in your b-day to view the site). I know I was shocked to see it in Seattle & Portland earlier this year.

And Scott, I agree that Shiner has spread far and wide. But at a ballpark's main concession, you expect only the most pedestrian and mainstream of beers -- and I didn't expect Shiner had reached such status in my Old Carolina Home.

A far cry from my brief exile in Charlotte, where Shiner was sold at "Import" prices.
