So you don’t like red light cameras?

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on December 27, 2007

There's been lots of discussion over the past year about red light cameras, more con than pro.

Leave it to those crazy Brits to come up with a truly revolutionary means of taking up arms against their oppressors. Motorists Against Detection have taken to destroying, even blowing up, red light cameras in their country.

Can a Texas chapter be far behind?*

Hat tip to Engadget.

Scott Doyle, says:

I really, really hope that someone runs a red light as MAD cats are approaching to destroy the camera.

And for all we know, masked city officials will start blowing 'em up in the night if revenues <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2007/aug/22/violations-and-revenue-red-light-cameras-are-down-/">don't come around</a>.

I wonder if they also contain plain ol' Canon cameras like <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2007/dec/06/farmers-branch-installs-security-cameras-uh-camera/">the one Farmers Branch put up</a>.

Also, I miss the days when a "terrorist" was someone who used terror as a weapon. Pretty sure nobody is terrorized by an inanimate object being blown up by people who (I assume) make sure nobody is going to get injured by the blast.

l2read <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/real_story/3271595.stm">the article</a>, Pavel:

  • A spokesman for MAD told Real Story that only cameras in isolated rural locations would be targeted by explosives. "In a deserted place miles from anyone the only person they (the bombers) are going to hurt is themselves," he said.

  • Responding, Mr Brunstrom said the police had a duty to treat the attacks very seriously. "This is terrorism - not of the sort that we fear internationally but this is terrorist behaviour. People making and planting bombs is terrorism and that's how we're treating it."

Pavel Lishin, says:

Great, how does that invalidate my point?

They're not "planting" bombs and waiting for innocent people to step on the tripwire. I think there's a big distinction. I'm not terrified of someone blowing something up in a desert.

Then again, I'm not British.

Rawlins Gilliland, says:

A few years ago, I watched a car run a red light (at Fair Oaks and Abrams) broadsiding a station wagon, killing a mother and daughter instantly. After that, I ~~1) don't attempt to enter an intersection on yellow light (as in gun it to get into the intersection 'on time') ~~2) All but clap when I see red light cameras. (Even when I was unfairly fined in California during a torrential downpour and could not see.)

Bottom line, stop thinking of yellow lights as a kind of quasi green light, and you'll have no need to fear (or blow up) red light cameras. Bring 'em on!

Hey, I'm not saying it is or isn't terrorism...just pointing out that they addressed your concerns in the article.

For the record, I'd hold a Brit cop's word much higher than a drunk Russian who's not even in Russia. OBVIOUSLY YOU'RE TRYING TO DESENSITIZE ME SO I'LL BE TERRIFIED!!!

Why blow them up? Most Texans drive pickups with cattle guards, so why cant they just run them over?
