Singing the praises of local dog rescue programs

Square Pegs

Published: January 29, 2007

Have you ever actually sang about a dog rescue program? No? Yes? No comment? Move along?

We just got a Great Pyrenees this past weekend from a well-mannered couple outside of Justin, Texas, who belong to the Texas SPIN (Saving Pyrs In Need) group. (Sorry, their rescue dog was so well-mannered, I transferred that quality to the humans.)

SPIN likes acronyms, if you take a look at their site you'll find these words:

Gentle

Reserved

Elegant

Affectionate

Trusted

Patient

Youthful

Responsible

Extraordinary

Natural Guardians

Extremely Loyal

Exceptional Intelligence

Superior Companions

How nice.

We visited two other homes that take in these dogs. They are wonderful people who do this. I couldn't turn my home into a rescue dog house for a number of reasons. One is that thinking about all these animals who don't get permanent families pretty much kills me. Another is that I don't want my house to smell like pee 24/7.

Anyway, all our pets have come from a shelter or rescue program. If you're looking for a pet, I wanted to take time to suggest this route. I also wanted an excuse to put up a photo of our new dog, Carolina:

Blair, I'm so glad you posted Carolina because now it gives me the excuse to post a couple pics of my family's little rescue dog. Trudy (I didn't name her) also happens to be my ghost writer on the weekends, hard at work in the office.

She also happens to not be a fan of Karleen Smith's.

We took in rescue stray Thanksgiving week and have since been blessed with the 8 puppies she just happened to be carrying. They are cute as the dickens but never give their mom a rest. How do I post a picture of them here?

Let it be known that I have you all beat, with a photo of my girlfriend's chihuahua.

Her name is Bomber.

And she will destroy you.

I bet you don't have a good pair of socks left to wear. Love the ears.

You people - and your dogs and cats - have nothing on me.

That's odd. He doesn't look particularly twisted.

Saturday Tastings in the Wine and Beer Department Little Joey just LOVES the Saturday wine tastings at Central Market - he particularly likes the blind tastings, when he can sneak a snort while Mommie's not looking. (Great nose!) More info
