Farewell to one of my early news influences

Sad news today: Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Doug Marlette died in a car crash today.
Doug was born in my hometown of Greensboro, NC, and was known for his editorial cartoons, as well as for his regular strip, Kudzu.
It was Doug's cartoons, particularly his prize-winning works on Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker in the 80s that made me realize that news could be fun; that the joke was funnier if you knew the backstory; and that funny could still be meaningful.
He'll be missed. Here's a sample of why...
(In response to Jim and Tammy)

His last cartoon:

KathrynHopper, says:
Not only was Doug Marlette was amazingly multi-talented, but he had two qualities I dearly admired - he always made time to help out young people and he wasn't afraid of pissing off the powers than be. He will definitely be missed.
