Regular readers know of my involvement with the Ferguson Road Initiative and its efforts to improve mine and surrounding neighborhoods -- and that it was an early inspiration for our neighborhood coverage.
We, like many communities, are participating in the National Night Out on August 7. It's an opportunity to get people out on their streets, meeting their neighbors and making the sorts of connections that make crimewatches effective.
Our Two-Points (Buckner/Peavy) area Weed and Seed is trying to do it up big so that we can really get people engaged in leveraging the resources being put towards turning our hood around. So our August 7 event is going to include a barbecue and (we hope) a band.
We're looking for a group that can play in the parking lot of an East Dallas church with minimal setup. Any genre could work, but given the thrust of the gathering, best if the majority of your lyrics don't advocate mayhem and buggery. If you're from the neighborhood, all the better, but that's not necessary. Because this is a charity deal, the best compensation we can offer is:
- Free barbecue by the renowned "Holy Smokes"
- A $500 advertising credit with Pegasus News (50,000 impressions to use to promote future paid gigs)
- Exposure in front of a couple hundred appreciative neighbors
- And the knowledge that you're making Far East Dallas a better place to live
