I know, I know. This David Beckham insanity must end soon. But for now, here's a little gem I found while searching Google news.
WhoWon.com posted an article that may be the worst timed PR ploy ever. It claims that if Beckham scores a goal tonight against FC Dallas, the Texas Motor Speedway will give his fans two free tickets to the Dickies 500 Nextel Nascar Series. The article was posted today, no less, after yesterday's "Beckham watch" lunacy. Let's dissect some of the reasons that this is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have read all week.
1) Uh, dude, Beckham didn't even travel. Much less is he going to play. And while he's known for having a wildly accurate and powerful free kick, I don't really think it's of transcontinental proportions.
2) So now the Texas Motor Speedway, who has nothing at all to do with soccer or supporting the MLS, is trying to profit off Beckham's image? Pretty shameful, but worse still...
3) Why the hell is the TEXAS Motor Speedway rooting for the player from the L.A. Galaxy to score?! Ugh, I know why, but give me a break.
In any case, this is a clear sign that Beckham mania may be going too far. And that racing promoters probably don't pay much attention to what's going on in breaking soccer news. I leave you with this final blurb from the article quoting TMS Pres. Eddie Gossage:
"I also would like to extend an open invitation to David to come out to Texas Motor Speedway and attend a NASCAR or IndyCar Series race or even try his hand at driving in a Team Texas stock car. Although if he ever decides to get in a stock car, I sure hope he doesn’t ‘Bend it like Beckham.’"
Priceless.

Gossage is usually smarter than that -- especially that horrid quote. I imagine that some advisor/pr person is catching hell right now.
Nice irony that this is the Google ad that shows up on the Beckham rants:

Ha! Great story. Soccer is a true international sport, and its beauty is not appreciated by most Amer-kuns, so i was glad to see that the fans who showed up in Frisco were treated to a very entertaining game. It had it all: fouls, fights, controversy, international intrigue, and count 'em - 11 goooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaals! Alas, the home team came up short, and Becks did not bother showing up, but a fun game nonetheless. Perhaps attendance will increase for FC Dallas.
