Lemonade stand entrepreneurship

Posted By Alan Cohen in Square Pegs on June 1, 2007

Sweet Leaf Tea is sending folks in the media a press release with five fun tips to help kids make money with a lemonade stand this summer. I mean decent enough idea except that most of the tips they give are bogus. Here is their list along with some revisions I've made to help educate the kids on business in the real world:

Five Lemonade Stand Tips for Kids brought to you by Sweet Leaf Tea

1. Make a bright and colorful sign to attract customers

Revision: Don't make a bright and colorful sign. The better your sign looks = the more money it looks like your parents have. Rip some cardboard off the side of a box, use a black magic marker, and in big messy letters come up with a good catch phrase like, "Need money to pay for mommies surgery. She all we have in the wurld. Buy lemonade 'cuz we don't want to be sent to a Foster home." Now that will attract customers.

2. Pick a safe and shady location

Revision: Don't pick a safe and shady location. No one goes to safe and shady locations. Set up on a downtown street corner right outside an office building. High traffic and the folks have money. Remember, stay out of the shade otherwise no one will see your awesome cardboard sign.

3. Keep your beverages cold and your customers happy

Revision: No glaring revision necessary on this one

4. Consider selling two or three different sizes

Revision: Don't sell two ore three different sizes. Sell small sizes and charge big. You are selling self-pity. Just remember, when in doubt, keep saying out loud, "I don't want to be a Foster child." If you say it, the dollars will come.

5. Talk to your parents about what to do with your hard-earned money

Revision: DON'T TALK TO YOUR PARENTS ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. This is a trap. They'll make you save it or give you a lecture about responsibility. Go buy a video game or candy or something like that.

This is deja vu all over again. You know the kids across the street from me, right?

Either that, or you saw them all last summer, and must have swerved around at least one of them in the middle of White Rock Trail!
