And you thought D-FW weather coverage was fear-mongering and ridiculous

Square Pegs

You might know that Gary England is the chief meteorologist for KWTV Channel 9, the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma. But what you don't know is that Gary England could be the deciding factor between whether you live or whether you die.

Below is an actual commercial created by KWTV. (Pay particular attention at 00:18, when the mother comforts her crying child by saying "Listen to Gary England. He's going to let us know when it's OK.")

Props to the Daily Show for airing this last night.

I saw this on the Daily Show and thought it was hilarious. As someone who is tired of the fear mongering and dramatics among our local weatherpeople, I enjoyed that this ad makes our weatherpeople/news stations look calm by comparison.

The sad thing is that our local news affiliates are probably sitting around right now, talking about how great the commercial is, only they are doing so in an un-ironic and deadly serious manner. It's just a matter of time before we see the first Pete Delkus Saves Us From The Killer Tornado commercial.

They forgot to warn viewers about the dangers of flying kitchen knives! And they dare to use the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval.

I grew up in Oklahoma City; believe it or not, Gary England is a quasi-legend there. I still have childhood memories of gathering with my parents and sisters in the center of our house during tornado warnings and listening to his voice.

As a matter of fact, Gary England served as the weather announcer in god-awful 1996 movie "Twister," starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.

Unlike some of DFW's faux-weathermen, however, England is actually a meteorlogical heavyweight, having participated in the development of Doppler radar and authored several books about weather, among other things.

Now, about the tone of the advertisement itself.... good grief!

Redefining the Disfranchised: The Political Art of Nina Allender As we continue to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote, there's a prime opportunity to view influential art from the era. Nina Evans Allender drew political cartoons for The Suffragist from 1914 into the 1920s, transforming stereotypical views of who a suffragist was. Over the years, Allender contributed more than 250 political cartoons to the movement, a number of which are on display at the Women's Museum at Fair Park. More info
