Trivia smackdown Tuesday night
Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on June 19, 2007
We picked up via a parenthetical the 411 that D Magazine fields a trivia team at the Tipperary Inn on Tuesday nights.
Tonight, Pegasus News will be in the house. I won't go so far as to predict a win, but I'll point out that starving entrepreneurs are particularly motivated when the bar tab is the prize. All shall know why host Gary calls it Bloodsport Trivia.

How'd it go?

We were in third until the all-crucial last question. Which I led the botching of.
Ironically, the two questions we really screwed were music.

What were the two questions (sans answers)?

David, the last question (the one we lost 16 points attempting to answer) involved putting the following four music-oriented milestones in correct chronological order.

shooting from the hip:
ipanema simon and garfunkel ac/dc boss
It seems too easy. There must be a catch or I'm stupid. maybe both.

I guess that question depends on which Simon and Garfunkel split the question has in mind, since there have been multiple:

J, David: don't shoot me, I'm only the movie guy.
It should be remembered that a) we were answering as a committee, which means that there were several iterations of the chronology under discussion at various points (one of which may well have been the correct one); b) beer was involved (some of which our otherwise-pleasant waitress spilled on one of our staff participants); and c) we probably had too much time to think about it, because the trivia master played three songs over the interlude of our answer opportunity.
Did I mention I'm just the movie guy?

David - very clever, not to mention amusing.
I'm such a musical ignoramus I had to google "blood brothers springsteen" to discover it was a Springsteen song. (SORRY!)
As for the movie Blood Brothers, no fewer than five show up in IMDB - nine if you count the "aka"s.

The problem is that we second-guessed like J Mortimer and put AC/DC ahead of Simon and Garfunkel.
The other music question that gave us a hurtin' was:
*Name The Doors' four highest-charting singles. (2 points each)*

I think that "Hello, I Love You" was a number 1 song. "L.A. Woman" and "Riders on the Storm" were big hits too. I go with those three plus "Light My Fire."

David, we're trying to remember the correct answers, but you are wrong in much the same way we were.
I think it was:

I think it was Touch Me instead of Love Me Two Times.

Eh, just for fun, my favorite 4 of the Doors are "Riders on the Storm", "Light My Fire", "The End" and "Paint it black".
I love me some Apocalypse Now Redux, too.

I don't think L.A. Woman was a single.
