Garage sale weekend extravaganza

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on March 2, 2007

One of our cooler features that occasionally gets buried in the shuffle:

Check your neighborhood page for garage sales around you this weekend.

We've got 241 of 'em. Surely you can find some junk you'll like.

This friend of my boss was always talking about what he acquired from "estate sales." (He's a guy who seriously needs to come out of the closet. Dating women doesn't make you straight.) He gets all giddy--hand clapping and all--about labels and brags this and that came from this or that famous maker.

He came into the office with the world's cheesiest floor screen of fake book spines supposedly to hide your crap and make people think you're well read. Cheesy wasn't important to him (in fact, he didn't think it was), it was more important that he was pretty sure it originally came for Nieman-Marcus.

My point to make is that it doesn't matter if you call it a "garage" sale or an "estate" sale. The only difference is that a garage sale is people selling off crap they don't want. An estate sale is people with taste selling off crap they don't want.

Come again? Thought an estate sale was family of the deceased selling off a dead person's crap they don't want? Seems they'd sooner sell off someone else's stuff than their own (or they just have nowhere to put it), so there's probably more quality items to pick up.

Heh, I never got to my point...BEING:

People who die tend to have no better taste than the ones still living. Not sure why estate sales are considered more tasteful, other than people being more willing to part with stuff that was never theirs.

I'm thinking that the family of the deceased has plenty of crap in their house, and thus are willing to part with higher quality goods.

Also, Doyle, AIM is hard. You wanna go check some of these out tomorrow?

Scott Doyle, says:

I concur, AIM is hard. I'll go if we stop for ice cream at some point (no idea why, but for some reason the cold weather makes me want ice cream).

Nothing like checking PegNews while drunk!
