Musical philosophical navel-gazing question

Square Pegs

Why is it that when I hear Zeppelin or Stones songs behind TV commercials I'm annoyed...

...and when I hear the Old 97's singing about baby-back ribs I cringe...

...but when I hear Hilton using Ben Folds' "Landed" on TV ads and as on-hold music I think it's cool as hell?

For me it depends on what the song is promoting or where it shows up. For instance, I think it's awesome when I hear an old punk/ska favorite on a Tony Hawk video game soundtrack, or if I hear a fresh new song from a local band on Grey's Anatomy or House.

But then there are the cases that really annoy me, like Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" song being used in an actual Mercedes Benz commercial. I'm pretty sure they just don't get the real message of that song. Or worse yet, when politicians pick their campaign songs, like Reagan picking "Born in the USA" (of course I was 3 at the time, so I wasn't too upset about it then). When it comes to those situations, I get mad to hear my favorite songs used so inappropriately.

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info
