Michael Young is the most overrated underrated player

Posted By Blair Lovern in Square Pegs on March 19, 2007

"Year after year, it seems, (Michael) Young is poised to shed the obscurity that comes with playing for the Texas Rangers," writes Jeff Passan on Yahoo! Sports.

Yeah, who the hell ever heard of the Wranglers, er - Range? Hold on. Dangers? Whatever team A-Rod signed a gazillion dollar contract with after he left that team in Oregon.

Michael Yngwie Malmsteen? Second baser, right? No? Well, he kinda plays near there, right? All-Star MVP in 2006? What's the All-Stars, I think I've heard of those people.

I'm sick of reading crap like this, and it happens just about every year with someone. Harold Baines (hey, he used to play for the Wranglers!) used to be the most overrated underrated player in history. Michael Whatshisname is officially going after that title now, although it's not his fault.

If you are a regular baseball fan - I don't mean hardcore, VORP-loving, IcanreciteeverylineupoftheGiantsfrom1922to2006backwards doofus - just a regular baseball fan and DO NOT know who Michael Young is, then you are not a regular baseball fan.

And if you are a baseball writer who:

1.) Thinks that just because a guy doesn't shoot (off his mouth) or (up steroids) or (GQ magazine covers) all day long then that must mean all those ill informed slobs not privileged enough to sit in the glorified press box must be clueless about said guy, who's been one of the best hitters in the game for four seasons (and a good one for six)

2.) Laments how Michael Whatever doesn't ever talk about the other 11 players in baseball history who have had 200 hits in four straight years seasons, "which is quite the shame...." (like Tom Hicks writes million dollar checks to Michael Somethingorother to go on a lecture tour with David McCullough!)

Then you, dear sir or madam, are just plain silly.

We need professional sportswriters for this?

What do you think?
