Omnibus “We ain’t taking it down” post

Square Pegs

Published: October 2, 2007

I can always tell when we're on another growth spike. Our pattern since launch has been spike-plateau-spike-plateau. The spikes mean new users who don't necessarily instantly get what we do here. The tell-tale sign is an uptick in "you better take down this piece of content that I don't like" emails in my inbox. I've responded to no less than four in the last 24 hours -- which is more like a few weeks' worth during a plateau.

You can imagine that responding to these gets to be a trifle time-consuming. So, to save myself some time, I'm working on a form letter.

Dear {politician / restaurateur / corporate marketing guy / fan of sports team x / fan of band y / xenophobe}:

I am sorry to learn that you are displeased with the {public information / user review / funny photo jazzing up your press release / assessment of your team / review of your band / stance taken in our recent piece on your city} posted on Pegasus News.

We are indeed aware of the libel laws in this country, and in terms of posting {campaign contributions / user reviews / satirical photos and captions / opinions on your team / that your band is of genre x / palabras en Espanol}, I can assure you that we are within our legal rights.

If you are unhappy with the material here, we encourage you to {not run for office if you don't want public info public / contact the aggrieved user and try to make the situation right instead of yelling at us / be glad that someone is picking up your release and using The Daily You to push it to people who might actually care / not root for a losing team / provide some audio by which our users can judge your sound / work proactively towards a fair and practical solution instead of lobbing threats at a website}.

Thanks for the opportunity to explain our position. And for future reference: {legal threats / condescension / name-calling / presumptive "I look forward to your removing the content and providing a public and abject apology" statements / threats of violence / bribery attempts / incoherent screaming} do not make us more sympathetic to your cause.

Love and kisses,

Dear publisher/friend/head pirate/just-a-working-class-joe-masquerading-as-a-bigwig:

I'm so glad you responded to these losers/morons/intellectual giants in this fashion. I greatly respect you for it. Clearly, these clowns/fools/people-who-don't-have-a-life need an outlet for their rage, and unfortunately, you are IT.

Hang in there/chins up/remember Friday's coming/Sincerely:
