This is a new feature that most users won't even notice immediately, but that we hope will make the site much deeper and more easily navigable.
As regular users already know, the "news" in Pegasus News is supported by a massive database of places, people, organizations, bands and the like -- with further enhancement on certain subsets like schools, politicians, restaurants, football games, etc.
We've got our staff pretty well trained to link to these objects when writing a story. But what we've been less good about is going back to these data objects and creating related links back to the stories.
This week, the dev team rolled out a "related object" feature in our admin interface, which makes it so that when we link an object in a story, it automagically creates a related link on the data page. To prevent clutter with minor items while keeping in the loop, links eventually expire, unless we tag them as "sticky."
How does this effect you? Pick your favorite person, place, thing or band in the area... Now you can quickly get updated on what's going on with them just by checking their page.
Here's some examples:
- Clicking the first link in this story on the De Soto / Garland game takes you to the game page where the related stories are also listed
- The "Dallas Independent School District" link in this story puts the story on the DISD page.
- Likewise, this story on Ron Price links his alleged skullduggery in a more semi-permanent fashion
It'll take a bit of time for us to retrain to use these all the time, but methinks it'll make for a better and more useful site.
