Avast, me heartys…

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on September 19, 2007

Some o' ye have noticed a small change in all o' th' copy on th' site today. One o' our content partners asked why his copy were bein' in a "hybrid o' pidgin-Irish and ebonics."

Seems that our developers have mutinied and put a filter on everything fer International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Fear not. All will be back t' normal tomorrow. And hey, if NPR can do it...

And Aye, we've thought about th' ramification o' this running on serious stories. And we did it anyway. That's how we roll.

What's really frightening is how many pieces I'm reading o'er that don't seem all that different from before...

Big ups t' Jacob Kaplan-Moss fer writing th' script.

Just realized: "The Daily You" is now "The Daily Ye"?

God knows if the above will translate or not...

This is a great bit on your part...it's going to force me to re-read everything I read today to understand what the heck everyone was actually saying to produce some of this language.

You guys could really have some fun with this on other days (Redneck day, Old-world English day)...although I'm sure some of it would quickly turn a little non-PC.

Better yet, you could make this a user preference, to be able to select the dialect of your choice and always read the stories that way. It wouldn't be quite as annoying when the Racist, Fascist, Religious-right discussions pop-up.

I'll confess that I was initially skeptical of this mutiny, but I've gotten nothing but positive response, so maybe it'll be an annual tradition.

Can we work up something for St. Paddy's day?

Perhaps next year, we can get The Bilge Pumps involved.

Here we are amongst all of the others celebrating yesterday:

 1. A response from a killjoy:

*Congrats! I just trashed your Bookmark/ favorite, off of my browser. Your abbreviations, silly language on the webpages today is just that -- silly. You don't have anything that the D blogs, or DMN or its blogs, don't have either. Your site is a waste of time. I've hit it daily for the last couple of months, but no more. What an adolescent bunch of trash.*

Tell him, "Lighten up, Francis." Sheesh. Between the election and the stock market, folks are too stinking testy these days.
