A new feature on the Square Pegs blog, in which we put forth a feature that seemed like a good idea at the time and see if anyone cares about it before we kill it.
The first contestant is "The Outside World" box on the homepage, which provides video clips on national news, mostly from CBS, WSJ and the AP. It looks like this screenshot:
Why would we kill it? Let's ask our CTO, Jeremy:
TheNewsRoom.com sucks in terms of requests for the widget-- it's almost half the requests needed to render the homepage.
He tells me that there are 42 trips through the Interwebs for the intrepid little Matrix denizens who bring you news that is certainly not core to our panlocal mission.
So, unless we hear some compelling arguments otherwise between now and high noon on Monday, we will jettison "The Outside World." Its fate lies in your hands...

I agree -- get rid of the outside world. It bugs me to no end when I scroll down the homepage and then have to wait a whole two seconds for that video feed to load. What matters more than the Metroplex anyway?

I can tell you this. It delays or interrupts rendering of the page so I either get a delay or a jump when scrolling for a feature I don't use.

Dude named after the Kinks-ish character, glad you like it. We have some other, potentially cooler ideas, but we're focused on some existing projects right now.
