This is one of those prize packages that I'm shocked we've gotten our hands on: Our friends (and advertisers) at Single Gourmet DFW are putting on a cooking class at Sur la Table with Tre Wilcox of Top Chef and Abacus fame on Wednesday, April 16 from 7-9 PM.
Ordinarily, this would require a membership to Single Gourmet DFW ($195) plus the tickets for the event ($99 with wine; $89 without).
Five of our lucky readers will get to go for free, gratis, nada.
Here's the deal: We're handing out the first two via The UnContest, that groovy deal where the wizard in the Interwebs tells us whose Daily You profile best matches the prize.
Readers who love dining content and have posted in their user profile that they are single: John Connolly and Lauren Vaughn both get one ticket each. They've got until Tuesday morning to respond and claim their tickets.
You can enter to win one of the other three tickets by clicking "add to favorites" the event page and/or the Single Gourmet DFW page on our site. (Requires free registration/login.) We'll draw winners on Tuesday.
Now because this is an open registration deal, we can't require anything but that you are 21+ (due to the wine). However, do bear in mind that this is a group for single professionals 30+ and that the ideal situation is that you'll fit that demographic. However, if a 21 year old on his sixth wife wins, we're not going to kick him out. (Although we will murmur loudly.)

This is insanely awesome. There are so many people I’d like to thank, people I just couldn’t have done it without. First, my ex-boyfriend for being such a tool that I dumped him, thus making myself SINGLE. Second, I’d like to jointly thank Pegasus News and Single Gourmet. SG, I have a feeling I’m about to give you 200 of my hardest working dollars to join your little club (heretofore unknown to me, WHA???). Let’s be new best friends!

Tre's an awesome guy!
Very down-to-earth and clear-headed. Spoke to his audience well, keeping in mind it's a room full of singles. Particularly spent time explaining that presentation and preparation of food are equally important, i.e.:
Handled a couple of mis-steps with class, and everything flowed more like a discussion than a lecture imo.
Unfortunately, my cougar quest was thwarted in that I'm not down with peeps twice my age. Doubt there were more than a few in attendance below 45 (and I doubt those few were below 35). So, sorry Ed - won't be purchasing an annual membership within the next 15 years. Feel free to diary it and drop me a line; hopefully Miko's little project here will still be around.
However, if you're a middle-aged gentleman looking for a nice lady (or some nice ladies if that's how you roll) who want to cook delicious meals for you, I highly suggest it. Room was 90% women looking for a man to spoil.

Scott... I coulda pinged ya that warning if I knew you would be casting about there. I went to few events in their inaugural year. I was about 44 at the time and I wasn't down with peeps twice my age either. I even got called out for wearing jeans to a bar event! Got my money back and ran.
Stand back now... they have lots of flamethrowers at the ready... ;-)

Casting didn't really bother me, but that could be b/c I was mostly interested in seeing/hearing Tre go through the motions (although having a cougar story on account of Miko's contest would have been terrific).
Didn't know I was going until day of. Besides, not exactly my game to post "o hi, won me some tix y'all!". I went straight from work so I was in khaki's and a polo, but there were a couple of peeps with jeans on...this was more of a listen & learn deal, though, than a socializing event.

If you like cooking and meeting cool people, come back to a real class at SLT. I work there, take classes there, and it's very fun. We cook (unlike Ed's SG thing) and eat, and you get 15% off in the store the evening of the class. Yes, this sounds like an advert, but I'm into it and it's really fun. We're cool - come see us. I'm Susan and I approved this message.

Honestly, seeing how much goes into just one meal and how easy it is to screw things up kinda turned me away from the whole culinary skills bit (granted, I doubt scallops then veal are the easiest things to prepare).
On the one hand, ladies love a guy who can cook. On the other...I can afford to just take them somewhere with good chefs (note this is very different than me having the will to pay for it).
Needs dates/times/cost, Susan.

Hey Scott - you can access our cooking class schedule at www.surlatable.com. At the bottom of the page, go to "cooking classes," which will take you to a list of locations offering classes. Click on "Dallas" and you'll get our full schedule with dates, class offerings, and prices.
Also, there was a misunderstanding in my earlier post - I never meant to dis Single Gourmet; I was only stating that the demo class offered for them was different from the hands-on classes usually offered. Sorry, Ed!

"Cooking Classes" at the bottom of the page leads to an error, Susan.
When's the next one and how much does it cost? Also, are there varying levels - i.e. novice, intermediate, advanced? The most complex thing I've ever attempted is green bean casserole (I consider grilling burgers and things of that nature not terribly complex) - and I don't have much interest in things chefs consider challenging.

Looks like it's down for maintenance - try again tomorrow and it will probably work. I had some trouble with it today, too.
Classes are held most nights during the week and on Saturday mornings. They range from Cooking 101 to any type of cuisine you can imagine. Schedule this week is "Tex Mex 101" Tuesday, "Global Cuisines: Mexico" on Thursday, "Spring Tapas" on Friday, and "Cake Decorating" on Saturday. Evening classes start at 6:30 and end around 9:00; Saturday classes are 10:30am - noonish.
Anyone of any experience level is welcome - we have novices, of course, but also folks with experience who just want to learn new techniques and/or cuisines. Cost is $69/person ($79 if it's a fish/sushi class) - you cook, you eat, and you get 15% off in the store the day of the class, then 10% off for a week afterwards. You can sign up online (when it's back up) or come by/call the store (4527 Travis Street next to Trece/214-219-4404). It's really great for learning new techniques and trying out different equipment, and the food is always great. And, as I said before, it's FUN.
