America’s fastest-dying industries

Germane in light of yesterday's layoffs at the Star-T. According to Forbes, you're a dinosaur if you're in:
- bowling alleys
- music publishing
- laundry services
- beer production
- wired telecoms
- arcades and entertainment complexes
- tobacco farming
- newspaper publishing
- videotape and dvd rental
- footwear manufacturing
Should we add TV broadcasting to the list?
Particularly unsettling to notice in the recent national wave of media layoffs is that the Interweb elves, who are supposed to be "the future," are starting to be included. As an industry, have we hit the dregs of the seed corn?
I like where we sit now, as a pure-play inside a good, not-highly-leveraged company. But these are volatile times indeed. Strap in folks-- I think the coaster car carrying the media business just crested the last big hill.
(Hat tip to Greg Sterling.)

I don't see anything about beer production or footwear manu in the article, Miko.
If we're talking about just in the U.S. I guess it's not too difficult to believe on the footwear piece, but beer? Even if production isn't growing dramatically, is it really a dinosaur industry?

Beer does seem hard to believe. Craft breweries are popping up everywhere in America. Or maybe that's a statement against mass produced beer manufacturers.

Ahhhhhh, just as I figured. Can't really say it's a fast-dying industry, Forbes, when you concede that "as long as humans inhabit the planet, beer will be sold"!
Tough times for employees, though, since employment is expected to drop 10% versus only a 4% drop in production. I guess automation is ever-increasing?
