Outrage of the day: Euless Trinity football player blindsides ref

Square Pegs

Published: December 15, 2008

Okay, so this is a little out-of-date, but since it apparently hasn't been reported by any local media yet, here ya go: On Dec. 6, the Allen Eagles defeated the Euless Trinity Trojans to advance to the Texas 5A Division I semifinals (they've since moved on to the finals). However, Allen's win over a team that had a 27-game winning streak going into the game shouldn't have been the biggest story. Instead, it should have been this:

That's a Euless Trinity player blindsiding a referee. Not some accidental hit in the heat of action -- a purposeful blindside. Don't believe me? Check out the video:

Somehow, this heinous act has not come to light except on a couple of non-local blogs (h/t SPORTSbyBROOKS and BuzzCuts); there was no mention of the hit in either the Dallas Morning News or Star-Telegram story.

I think this sort of thing has no place in any level of sports, much less high school football, and the player involved should be dealt with harshly.

So, what's going to be done about it? Anything?

Interesting.

This took ages to attempt to load at work, so I waited til I got home to view. Thought there might have been a valid reason the kid ran into the ref, but he's a safety and the run came to his side...absolutely no alibi. (hope that RB scored on that play, btw)

Any word on what this chump claimed happened?

OK, so I'll probably get dogpiled for this, but are we absolutely sure it was intentional?

At what point in the game was this? Had the refs just called something against Euless Trinity? Based on just this six-second snippet I'm not willing to convict this kid. Isn't it possible that he was reading the quarterback's eyes, and was trying to jump a slant to the flanker, and just got totally faked out? It seems like the hit is somewhat of a glancing one.

Maybe he just got faked out of his shoes, made a bad football play, and accidentally ran over the ref?

WTH? Is there a clip somewhere with some pre-snap context?

Webbhill, I've been reading the message boards who have been referring traffic to this post, and the consensus from those who claim to have been there is that this play was late in the game, once the outcome was clear. Also that the player had been complaining throughout the game that the refs were not calling holding on the other team, hence a motive.

Can't be absolutely sure it was intentional, but sure looks it to me.

Looked pretty intentional. Dude wasn't even running to the right side of the play.

yeah, at work the vid was pretty choppy so I wasn't sure - but after further review, it's hard not to say it was intentional. As soon as the ball is snapped he looks in the ref's direction and doesn't deviate whatsoever. You can also tell he tries to clip him just enough to 'maybe' make it look unintentional, 'cause he knew he wouldn't get away with a outright tackle of the guy.

Pretty sorry, especially for a young HS kid. He'll probably be one of those kids that assault & murder homeless people "for fun" when he "grows up".

cho, not sure what kind of context you're looking for -- is there a legitimate reason (aside from the highly unlikely event webbhill describes) that would make this kind of thing okay?

Webbhill, not at all trying to dogpile you here...but how often do you watch football?

It's not a pass play, there are no eyes to read. Once the ball is handed off to the back there's absolutely no reason for a safety to continue moving away from his side of the field - ESPECIALLY when that's the side the run is developing on. Had he stayed home instead of going after the ref, running back likely wouldn't have the open field he did, etc.

Looks pretty damn intentional on the vid is all we're sayin' here.

This kid lines up in the blind spot of the umpire. At the snap, he runs straight at the official and launches into him. Everyone on that field is wearing pads and protective gear EXCEPT for the officials. This is ASSAULT and should be dealt with criminally.

While appropriate that the school has already taken action against the athlete, and the UIL is investigating the incident, this type of premeditated act deserves criminal punishment and an example made of this type of dangerous behavior. It should also be a lesson that rules and laws apply to everyone, even to nationally ranked team members.

Looks like the refs are starting to fight back:

Okay, not really -- just a funny snapshot from a real accidental hit on a football field.

the kid has no defense with this clip and plenty of motive. if it is brought to court, it is a no-brainer plea.

punishment should be to never play organized sports at the high school level again with community service of multiple hours of cleaning up the football field before, during and after football games with a t-shirt that reads,"I have anger management isssues." He can then attend anger management classes to attempt to prevent further cheap shots against the weaker, unprotected, elderly. Playing ball is an honor, the dishonor Euless Trinity brought to the sport is sad. Would the player feel as just if there was a retaliation as sick that blidsidingly came his way? Fact is one call didn't lose this contest, but the official probably lost his love of the game because some disturbed, misdirected kid didn't get his way. Would love to hear a commentary from his coach and parents?

Hate to interrupt your very late knee-jerk reaction, but...

Ramos declined to name the player, but Internet video of the hit shows the player wearing No. 47, which is listed on the Trinity roster as senior linebacker Elikena Fieilo.

Barring him becoming a 13th grader, he won't be playing at the HS level regardless.

And court? Unless the ref is filing charges there's not much a court can do about it...kid simply needs a good ol'-fashioned whoopin.

I was there at the game. There were only a few seconds left in the game when he tackled the ref. It was blatant and premeditated. The only punishment I have heard of him receiving is his college football scholarships possibly being revoked. I'm not sure if it's true but truth or not it seems like a fair punishment.
