Facebook: Fort Worth does not exist

Posted By Mike Orren in Square Pegs on July 5, 2008

I was tweaking some things in the PegNews advertising account on Facebook today, setting up a little ad run around the iPhone edition.

When you set your city targeting in Facebook, it only lets you pick things that appear in an autocomplete list. Not unusual, especially when a site is databasey.

But here's the thing: There's no Fort Worth to select. I would chalk it up to a case of left-coasters not realizing that there's anything but Dallas and Houston in the Lone Star Nation. But Arlington, Plano, etc. are there. Just no Cowtown.

Conspiracy theorists, do your stuff...

Peter Stawicki, says:

I say this as someone who has a Myspace and Facebook page and my biggest question is why would anyone want facebook? All I ever get is new application requests. Someone wants me to sign up so I can find out how many people think my cherry pie is better than the other 139,000 in their friendship base.

They make it hard as heck to actually send a basic message and while the photo upload capabilities are a little better than their competition - its not enough for me to choose this as a primary website for me. I would much prefer to use myspace with its stupid dating advertising because I can shut off the applications and I can always find a place to leave a message or a comment. Am I alone here?? (Quite honestly Im on Linked in more for the possible work contacts)

Peter: Myspace allows people to embed videos and sounds that play automatically as soon as you load the page.

Facebook doesn't allow this.

Facebook is better. Q.E.D.

I guess I am again the guy holding on to his betamax, eight tracks, and 12" laser disks.... (Sigh)

As a candidate, my campaign uses them all. MySpace needs to lay off the new main page ads. It slows down your computer.

<a href="http://adblockplus.org/en/">Adblock</a> and <a href="http://flashblock.mozdev.org/">Flashblock</a>, John. The web has never been more beautiful.

Or at least, less annoying.
